Turkey Lurkey Time (and formal introductions)

I would say that fall is my favorite time of year. I would say that I love the way crimson and sunset leaves tumble to the ground or the way the day seeps into night earlier than usual. I would even say that I love going home early to snuggle in my bed and watch Netflix. I would say all of these things.

But they would be lies.

I will not lie to you guys, I am not a big fan of fall. Falling leaves are low-key depressing and the premature darkness that comes with daylight savings makes me seriously disoriented. I think sweaters are itchy and warm beverages always seem to burn me. The cold and I aren't really homies and I'm not too chipper about being forced to wear three layers in the morning, only to be sweating my butt off by the end of the day. However, there is one thing that I love about the fall. Yep, you guessed it.

Thanksgiving.

Yes, I, Nia Curry, am a fan of the infamous colonizer's day. Why? Well, because I get to spend those three days (Thanksgiving is a three day holiday in my world) with the best and most important people in my life. It is a holiday full of good food, laughter, and of course memories. Also, I have a bomb Thanksgiving playlist that I will be sharing with you all at the end of this post.

I know that I promised a formal introduction in this post. However, I feel like the best way to introduce myself is by telling you abut some of my favorite people and why they make the holiday season great for me. Let me start with the first day of Thanksgiving.

Tuesday: Tuesday was the start of my three day holiday. School had been a half day that day, so I was able to go to my friend Katharine's house to prepare for Friendsgiving that evening. Now let me tell you about Katharine. Katharine-blonde haired, ridiculously beautiful, seemingly quiet but actually a complete savage Katharine-is a long time friend of mine. She is my advisory buddy, my AP European History study partner, and the tame to my wild. She is the kind of person that is nice enough to open her home up to seventeen teenage girls for a gathering that will most likely end in a mess. I have a special place in my heart for that girl, and mostly because of my fond memories with her. Since last year, Katharine and I go back to her house before Friendsgiving and prepare the food for everyone. Even though I am horrible at cooking and could probably burn water, Katharine and I wash and peel potatoes, cook ham, and rock out to playlists together. This year, we were joined by another friend of mine, Kaitlyn, who helped us flip hamburgers and make macaroni and cheese. Soon enough all of my friends arrived to Katharine's house and the celebration began. Although everyone at that party is dear to me, I will tell you about a couple of my closest friends.

Blaine: My lovable, sassy best friend who always dresses to impress. Blaine is one third of my trio, and one fourth of the BSU. Whenever anything goes down in my life, I know Blaine will be there with humor and amazing advice. Blaine is an Ethiopian goddess, what with her beautiful dark caramel skin, her long thick hair, and always perfectly shaped eyebrows. Due to her being a vegan, she brought humus to the party, as well as amazing dance moves.

Sarah Margaret: My love and heart. She is absolutely pretty and always down for a good time. She and I have some of the wildest memories together, one of them being that we snuck out of the house for a late night drive to the middle of nowhere. She is a wild child, but also a sweetheart.

Elizabeth: My theatre Queen. She and I were a part of the musical together, and it honestly astounds me that we never became super close until this year. Her humor is unrivaled, and knows exactly what to say. Did I mention she is a Queen?

Mallory: One fourth of the BSU and a low-key baddie. On the outside she may seem like a calm collected Queen who would never break the rules, but she is the sass master. She can pop, lock and drop it like no other, and has a heart of gold. She is my love.

As everyone gathered around to celebrate, I realized that there was one person who was missing. It wasn't until the music was going and we had started eating when the platonic love of my life, Lilli, walked into the room, fashionably late and with drinks in hand.

I firmly believe that every person in life has a soul mate. When I was younger, I used to lay up at night wondering what my soulmate looked like and where he lived and what our wedding would be like. It wasn't until high school when I realized that my soulmate A. wasn't a guy B. wasn't a love interest C. was known by the name of Lilli. She's the bees to my knees, the black to my white (even though we both are black), the right to my left. She is not my best friend; she's my sister. She is one third of my trio, and one fourth of the BSU. She and I have been sisters for longer than I can remember, and she knows me better than I know myself. Whenever anything happens, she is the first to know. I would definitely platonically marry her. And she was walking into Friendsgiving an hour late with a grin on her face.

The night ended with, of course, full bellies and profane rap lyrics blasting through the speakers. It was the last Friendsgiving with my senior best friends and of course we spend it right.

Now, on to the second day of Thanksgiving.

Thursday: I know that I said Thanksgiving was a three day holiday, but I didn't say that the three days had to fall right next to each other. Alas, Thanksgiving was spent in the Curry household. Soft music wafted through our house as we prepared for a family dinner. My mother was cooking in the kitchen, and my two brothers  were chatting in the sun room about some new video game. My father was milling about, cracking dad jokes that honestly weren't even close to being funny, and Lilli, an honorary member to my family, was telling me about her day. Even my dog, Zoey, was happy about the holidays. My Thanksgiving was peaceful, spent with my family and my best friend, and I couldn't ask for anything better.

Friday: A.k.A Black Friday. Of course, I had woken up that day bright an early to head to the mall. Even though I was going out in public, I had thrown on some sweatpants and hoop earrings and was ready to fight my way to find the best sells. The last day of this three part holiday was spent by myself. It's interesting. I am someone who seems extraverted, but I need my moments alone. Something as simple as walking around a mall with my earphones in is therapeutic to me. I was at peace with the world that Friday.

I would love to say that the my holiday peace continued over into the weekend but it didn't. Unfortunately for seniors, senior year is full of many goodbyes. That Friday night, when I came home, I had to say goodbye to my boyfriend and things ended between the two of us. Of course, because things are complicated, these endings don't always end on the best of terms. Even though I would love to talk to you guys about this, and eventually I will in the next blog post, I think I have written enough about my week. Thank you for reading and I hope that you had a wonderful turkey day!

With Love,

Nia
